Everywhere
we turn today we see .com's all around us.
Newspapers, radio, television are all pointing us to a web site somewhere,
even the commercials have their own web sites.
While some technology companies are having their troubles...
the Internet and the Web Sites on it are still growing at an unbelievable
pace. Not all companies have a web site, however the time is fast
approaching when there will be more people and businesses looking
for your product or service on the internet than in the phone book.
Some even see the demise of the phone book in the not-too-distant
future.
What does this mean to you? Should you have a web site? You betcha,
and the sooner the better! There are a number of factors to consider
when you are building your web site. For starters, as with any successful
venture you should look to someone with experience in web site design.
While anyone can make a web page there is a world of difference between
a professionally done web site that is effective (and actually found
on the internet) and a "home grown" site.
Sometimes, Less is More...
When designing a web site it is important to only add materials and
graphics that enhance the users knowledge of the product or service
you to have to offer. Just because something can be done doesn't mean
it should be. The main reason for this is connectivity. Those of us
in large urban areas often have access to high speed connections and
forget that the rest of the world is connected at 28,800 bps and yes
I know there are a lot the 56K modems out there, but one should remember
you are only as good as your phone line. If you design your site for
high band width you had best know that your customer base, as well
as most of the world, will not wait for large files to load and will
back out of the site and go elsewhere. This means we should limit
the use of java script and especially flash. These take a long time
to load on a slow connection and can frustrate the business person
who is always short of time and as often as not under deadlines to
have work completed.

Something
to be Said for Service...
There are a lot of sales happening on the Internet. Still most of
us should be using the internet as an information base to bring customers
to the store or service. The importance of online customer service
is often overlooked.
Where Am I...
Ease of navigation around the site is paramount. We always need to
make the site as simple to navigate as possible. Further, there should
never have to be a treasure hunt to find contact information such
as phone numbers and email addresses.
Don't I Know You from Somewhere...
The web site should reflect the company. This means the logo, company
colours and tone should be consistent with the way the organization
presents itself in all their marketing aspects. This lends itself
well for branding, and the user sees what they are expecting, be it
in the company office or on the Internet.
